NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED FOR THE 14th ANNUAL SCREEN ACTORS GUILD AWARDS®

Actor® Awards Ceremony will be Simulcast Live on Sunday, Jan. 27, on TNT and TBS
at 8 PM ET/PT, 7 PM CT, 6 PM MT

Los Angeles, California - Nominations for the 14th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards® for outstanding performances in 2007 in five film and eight primetime television categories and for the new SAG honors for film and television stunt ensembles were announced this morning in Los Angeles at the Pacific Design Center’s Silver Screen Theater in West Hollywood.

Screen Actors Guild President Alan Rosenberg introduced Jeanne Tripplehorn (Big Love) and Actor® recipient Terrence Howard (The Brave One), who announced the nominees for this year’s Actors®. SAG Awards™ Committee member JoBeth Williams and Committee Vice Chair Daryl Anderson announced the stunt ensemble nominees.

Screen Actors Guild will honor its own and celebrate the 75th anniversary of its founding at the 14th Annual Actors® ceremony on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2008, at the Los Angeles Shrine Exposition Center, simulcast live nationally on TNT and TBS at 8 p.m. ET/PT, 7 p.m. CT, and 6 p.m. MT. Recipients of the stunt ensemble honors will be announced from the SAG Awards™ red carpet during the TNT.TV and TBS.COM live pre-show webcasts.

Of the top industry accolades presented to performers, only the Screen Actors Guild Awards® are selected purely by actors’ peers. Two randomly selected panels–one for television and one for film--each comprised of 2,100 Guild members from across the United States, chose this year’s Actor® and stunt honors nominees. The secret ballots were mailed Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2007 by Integrity Voting Systems, the Awards’ official teller. Voting was completed by noon Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2007.

Awards ballots will be mailed on Friday, Dec. 28, 2007. The entire active membership of the Guild across the country will vote on all categories. Votes must be received by Integrity Voting Systems by noon Friday, Jan. 25, where results will be tallied and sealed until they are opened by the presenters at the 14th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards® ceremonies on Jan. 27.
The Screen Actors Guild Post-Awards Gala, benefiting the Screen Actors Guild Foundation, will be hosted for the 12th consecutive year by PEOPLE Magazine and by the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF).

The complete list of nominations for the 14th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards® follows. A replay of both announcements will be available for viewing on TNT.TV and TBS.COM.

Los nominados a los Golden Globes...

Who Wasn't Nominated for a Globe?
by Joal Ryan

Thu, 13 Dec 2007 10:47:07 AM PST

Assuming there is a Golden Globes, planners better order extra tables.

Seven films, from A (for Atonement) to T (for There Will Be Blood, were nominated Thursday for Best Drama as awards season's biggest pre-Oscar race named its horses.

Other categories were almost as crowded, with six TV shows up for Best Drama Series and and a septet of small-screen stars up for Best Drama Series Actress. (See complete list of Globe nominations.)

With the Hollywood Foreign Press showering so much love on so many, snubs for the likes of Desperate Housewives, 24, Heroes and The Sopranos' James Gandolfini, all high-profile no-shows in the TV categories, and Russell Crowe, passed over for American Gangster, all the more glaring.

Overall, the British period drama Atonement led the way with seven nominations, including one in the packed Best Drama category, where it'll try to elbow out the drug-lord tale American Gangster, the tattooed Eastern Promises, the Denzel Washington-directed, Oprah Winfrey-produced The Great Debaters, the principled Michael Clayton, and the critics' pets, the Coen brothers' thriller No Country for Old Men and the Paul Thomas Anderson oil saga, There Will Be Blood.

The Musical/Comedy field sports the traditional number of nominees, five: the Beatles-tuned Across the Universe, the Tom Hanks-Julia Roberts political yarn, Charlie Wilson's War, the all-dancing, all-bopping Hairspray, the deadpan Juno and the all-singing, all-bloodletting Sweeney Todd.

Charlie Wilson's War, heretofore a small-time player in the year-end awards, was the second-biggest Globe nominee, with five. No Country for Old Men, which dominated the New York Film Critics Circle Awards, stayed on the Oscar track with four nominations. Sweeney Todd and Michael Clayton also had four each.

In TV, two shows that, judging by their ratings, were unfamiliar to most viewers were the biggest nominees: FX's legal drama Damages and the HBO TV movie Longford, with four each.

Damages will compete for the Drama Series Globe against the extremely little-watched Big Love, Mad Men and The Tudors. House and Grey's Anatomy sneaked themselves, and their sizable fan bases, into the category, too.

In the Comedy Series race, two pay-cable shows with devoted, but tiny audiences, Californification and Extras, will face one pay-cable show with big buzz, but smallish ratings, Entourage, and two broadcast network shows, 30 Rock and Pushing Daisies, that would kill for Two and a Half Men's Nielsen numbers.

The film categories aren't exactly filled with box-office favorites, either.

Michael Clayton, for one, never found much of an audience for its ethical dilemma, but George Clooney still found his latest Globe nomination, for Drama Actor.

Clooney is up against Daniel Day-Lewis (There Will Be Blood), James McAvoy (Atonement), Viggo Mortensen (Eastern Promises) and Washington, in the game for American Gangster, not his upcoming The Great Debaters.

Owing to his recent wins in the New York and L.A. critics awards, anti-star Day-Lewis is probably the category frontrunner, although the race is far harder to call than last year when Forest Whitaker won everything on his way to the Oscar for The Last King of Scotland.

The Drama Actress category, likewise a pick-'em race once again after last year's Helen Mirren sweep for The Queen, pits critical favorites Julie Christie (Away from Her) and Kiera Knightley (Atonement) against box-office queen Jodie Foster (The Brave One), and Globe favorites Angelina Jolie (A Mighty Heart) and Cate Blanchett (Elizabeth: The Golden Age). Knightley is the only non-Oscar owner in the bunch.

The Musical/Comedy acting categories feature bigger movies, if not always bigger names.

Hairspray newcomer Nikki Blonsky, Enchanted's on-the-rise Amy Adams and Sweeney Todd's Helena Bonham Carter are up for Comedy/Musical Actress opposite Ellen Page, for her buzz-making performance in the indie hit Juno, and French star Marion Cotillard, for her rendering of Edith Piaf in La Vie En Rose.

Johnny Depp (Sweeney Todd) and Tom Hanks (Charlie Wilson's War) lend their brand names to the Comedy/Musical Actor category. Onetime Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman (The Savages), Ryan Gosling (Lars and the Real Girl) and, in this year's Sacha Baron Cohen spot for unapologetic comedic performance, John C. Reilly (Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story) round out the field.

Hoffman and Blanchett were both double nominees.

In addition to Drama Actor, Hoffman is up in the Supporting Actor category for Charlie Wilson's War. His competition there: Casey Affleck, for the otherwise-ignored The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford; Javier Bardem, for No Country for Old Men; Tom Wilkinson, for Michael Clayton; and John Travolta, for getting in touch with his feminine side in Hairspray.

In addition to Drama Actress, Blanchett is a Supporting Actress nominee for her gender-bending take on Bob Dylan in I'm Not There. Thirteen-year-old Saoirse Ronan (Atonement), veterans Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone) and Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton), and Globe perennial Julia Roberts (Charlie Wilson's War).

Aside from the Crowe exclusion, the film acting categories featured few surprises, weighting heavily toward A-listers who know how to charm at Hollywood Foreign Press Association junkets (a factor that could explain the Crowe exclusion, come to think of it).

Acomplete absence of Desperate Housewives housewives and Heroes heroes was surprising in the TV acting categories, although less so in the case of Heroes, which fell to Earth during a prolonged sophomore slump.

With Wisteria Lane's leading ladies on the sidelines, the Musical/Comedy Series Actress field was comprised of reigning Ugly Betty champ America Ferrera, 30 Rock's Tina Fey, Samantha Who?'s Christina Applegate, Pushing Daisies' Anna Friel and Weeds' Mary-Louise Parker.

30 Rock's Alec Baldwin can repeat as Musical/Comedy Series Actor, provided he secures more votes than The Office's Steve Carell, Californication's David Duchovny, Pushing Daisies' Lee Pace and Extras' Ricky Gervais, who created the British show that spawned the U.S. remake that led to, breath, Carell's rival nomination.

The Sopranos' James Gandolfini, an upset loser at the Emmys, won't be abused by the Globes. Unless not getting nominated at all constitutes being abused. In any case, the Gandolfini-free Drama Series Actor field consists of Dexter's Michael C. Hall, House's Hugh Laurie, The Tudors' Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Big Love's Bill Paxton and Mad Men's Jon Hamm.

Everybody appeared to be nominated for Drama Series Actress, specifically, Medium's Patricia Arquette, Damages' Glenn Close, The Riches' Minnie Driver, The Sopranos' Edie Falco, Brothers & Sisters' Sally Field, Saving Grace's Holly Hunter and The Closer's Kyra Sedgwick. If you were not nominated, please don't complain to your agent until you first verify you were actually on a series this past season.

With two nominations, Grey's Anatomy can't really complain, but it can't really feel like its old hot self, either.

Katherine Heigl, passed over in the film category for her breakout role in Knocked Up, was the lone Seattle Grace staffer to rate an individual nod. She's in the far-flung TV supporting actress category opposite Damages' Rose Byrne, Brothers & Sisters' Rachel Griffiths, My Name Is Earl's Jaime Pressly and telepic players Samantha Morton (Longford) and Anna Paquin (Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee).

For a change, Entourage's Jeremy Piven has competition in the TV supporting actor field from one of its costars, Kevin Dillon. The other nominees: Damages' Ted Danson, Dirty Sexy Money's Donald Sutherland and Longford's Andy Serkis, finally freed from his Gollum guise.

The one category where stars didn't rate with Globe voters was Best Director, where Ben Affleck, Sean Penn and Denzel Washington were overlooked in spite of strong reviews, and in Washington's case, a Best Drama nomination, for Gone Baby Gone, Into the Wild and The Great Debaters, respectively.

Artist-director Julian Schnabel, nominated for The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, is the closest thing to a multihyphenate in the race, unless you count writers-directors Joel and Ethan Coen, who nabbed, yes, writing and directing nods for No Country for Old Men. Also nominated for Best Director: Tim Burton (Sweeney Todd), Ridley Scott (American Gangster) and Joe Wright (Atonement).

Here's a look at some other Globes story lines:

* Sure, Washington might have liked a shot at Best Director. And, sure, he (and Oprah) might have liked a shot at a lot of other nominations, too. But the one and only nod that the real-life drama about a 1930s college debate club did get was a big one that'll look nice in ads for the film, due out Christmas Day.
* The Iraq War not only brought down President Bush's poll numbers, but a couple of Oscar campaigns. The big-studio, big-name, Iraq-era dramas Lions for Lambs and Rendition were shut out.
* Aaron Sorkin is nicely recovered from Studio 60, thankyouverymuch. In addition to his current Broadway play, The Farnsworth Invention, the prolific one has a screenplay nod for Charlie Wilson's War.
* Judd Apatow's comedy brand was hard to miss at the multiplex this year. But there was no Globe love for Knocked Up or Superbad, both critical and box-office hits, only for the upcoming Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, which earned two nods, including one for the title song, "Walk Hard," cowritten, in part, by Apatow and nominated star Reilly.
* What do Clint Eastwood and Eddie Vedder have in common, besides not much? Double nominations in the music categories. Pearl Jam frontman Vedder's up for his contributions to Into the Wild; jazz enthusiast Eastwood's up for giving a beat to Grace Is Gone, the one Iraq War drama that wasn't entirely ignored.
* Debra Messing used to get annual nominations for Will & Grace. This year, she picked up a Miniseries/Movie Actress nod for The Starter Wife.
* Second-generation star Bryce Dallas Howard, daughter of Ron Howard, earned her first Globe nomination, in the Miniseries/Movie Actress category, for HBO's As You Like It. Mamie Gummer, daughter of Meryl Streep, didn't have the same luck with the bypassed Evening.
* Last week, a Grammy nomination; this week, a Globe nomination for Queen Latifah for Miniseries/Movie Actress for HBO's Life Support.
* The snubbed Desperate Housewives has plenty of company at the top of the Nielsen ratings. CSI, TV's most popular drama, and Two and a Half Men, TV's most popular half-hour comedy, likewise weren't nominated. For anything.

The 65th Annual Golden Globes are scheduled for Jan. 13 in Beverly Hills, provided the writers' strike doesn't hinder plans—and a picket line doesn't keep limos and their A-list occupants away from the show, to be broadcast on NBC.

Broadcast Film Critics go "Wild"

Another day, another critics-award announcement. This morning's nominations from the Broadcast Film Critics Association featured a few surprises, particularly the dominance of Into the Wild, which received seven nods, including Best Picture, two for writer/director Sean Penn, and three for cast members Emile Hirsch (pictured), Hal Halbrook, and Catherine Keener. Other big winners included the Coen Brothers' No Country for Old Men, which was the only other film to be named in the picture, director, and writer categories; and Michael Clayton, the only other contender to rack up three acting nods (for Clooney, Tilda Swinton, and Tom Wilkinson).

Other notable tidbits: Cate Blanchett scored a Best Actress nomination for Elizabeth: The Golden Age, in addition to her supporting-actress nod for I'm Not There; Lars and the Real Girl's Ryan Gosling and Eastern Promises' Viggo Mortensen beat out the likes of Denzel Washington for Best Actor; and Tommy Lee Jones mystifyingly got stiffed in both acting categories for In the Valley of Elah and No Country.

The BFCA's Top 10 — American Gangster, Atonement, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Into the Wild, Juno, The Kite Runner, Michael Clayton, No Country, Sweeney Todd, and There Will Be Blood — is especially important considering that in the last five years, that tally has contained all five of the eventual Oscar nominees for Best Picture. (The last movie to score with the Academy after being snubbed by the BFCA? 2001's Gosford Park.) So American Gangster's inclusion provides that film with a critical boost, while Charlie Wilson's War and 3:10 to Yuma are now officially on life support.

Critics groups go for 'No Country,' 'Blood'

The movie critics awards have been coming fast and furious over the last 24 hours, with no fewer than five groups announcing their winners. Far and away the big winner has been No Country for Old Men, which followed last week's National Board of Review victory with Best Picture honors from three more associations: the New York, Boston, and Washington D.C. societies. The only dissenting voice was the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, which named There Will Be Blood Best Picture, and the New York Film Critics Online, which split its prize between Blood and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.

In the lead-acting races, Blood's Daniel Day-Lewis scooped up three Best Actor awards (from New York, L.A., and New York Online), while Away From Her's Julie Christie added three more Best Actress prizes to her arsenal. And the supporting categories now have two bona fide frontrunners, as No Country's Javier Bardem (pictured) and Gone Baby Gone's Amy Ryan each won four of the five just-announced awards. Including her NBR win last week, Ryan has now won five Best Supporting Actress honors, losing only the New York Online prize to I'm Not There's Cate Blanchett.

Speaking of I'm Not There, Todd Haynes' take on Bob Dylan is one critical fave that seems to be underperforming in the early awards lists, landing only on the New York Online top 10. And both American Gangster and Charlie Wilson's War have been virtually MIA from all the awards action so far. The next few days bring nominations from the Broadcast Film Critics Association and the Golden Globes: Those two big-ticket films will need to pick up multiple nods to stay in the Oscar race.

Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood came up big with the Los Angeles Film Critics Association on Sunday (Dec. 9), taking awards for best picture, best director, best actor (Daniel Day-Lewis), and best production design (Jack Fisk). The epic, 158-minute Paramount Vantage film opens on Dec. 26. The Julian Schnabel-directed The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, about Jean-Dominique Bauby, the French magazine editor who communicates by blinking his left eye after a stroke leaves him paralyzed, was named best picture runner-up. Also doing well was Romanian import and Cannes Palme d'Or winner 4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days, which won foreign-language film and supporting actor for Vlad Ivanov's performance as an illegal abortionist. Marion Cotillard won best actress for her role as French chanteuse Edith Piaf in Picturehouse's biopic La Vie en rose, and Amy Ryan took best supporting actress for her work in two crime dramas: Gone Baby Gone and Before the Devil Knows You're Dead. No End in Sight, Charles Ferguson's critique of the Bush administration's handling of the aftermath of the Iraq War, was named top documentary, while Disney/Pixar/s Ratatouille tied with Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud's French-language Persepolis for the animation award. The L.A. Film Critics Association Awards will be presented on Jan. 12 at the Hotel Intercontinental in Century City.

2007 ALEXOLOGY MUSIC AWARDS!

He aki mis elecciones:

ACT OF THE YEAR

* Amy Winehouse. Even if her year is coming down in the last few months
(in-n-out of rehab, her husband goes to jail, concerts cancelled...), she was the talk in the music industry. BACK TO BLACK is not only an amazing album, it manage to get her a number one in native UK and a Top10 album in the US, where she's consider the revelation of the year, even thought BACK TO BLACK is her 2nd album. She also manage to score a hit on the world radio, with "Rehab", which has been covered by everybody. And with 6 Grammy nominations under her arm, 2008 will start better for the troubled lady.

OTHER NOMINEES:

* Róisín Murphy
* Kylie Minogue
* Timbaland

* Rihanna

SINGLE OF THE YEAR
* Robyn + Kleerup, "With Every Heartbeat". This song may be 2 years old, but this is just another example on how the Swedish are always ahead of the game in the music scene. A veteran in the music industry, Robyn recorded this track with DJ Andreas Kleerup 2 years ago as one of his singles, after Robyn released her self-titled album in 2005. The song did close to nothing on the Swedish charts, but the Brits started to import the song for club porpuse, and it became a hit. Early in 2007, Robyn released her self-titled album in the UK, and did nothing. WEH has number one written all over, even if Sweden didn't pay attention to it. The song, slowly but surely, started to climb in the UK charts and it became a hit reaching it's well deserved number one. This is what a good artist does. Falls, but shakes the dust off and continue fighting. WEH smells like a classic.

OTHER NOMINEES:

* Amy Winehouse, "Rehab"
* Rihanna + Jay-Z, "Umbrella"

* Sugababes, "About You Now"

* M.I.A., "Jimmy"

ALBUM OF THE YEAR

* Amy Winehouse, BACK TO BLACK. The whole world has praised this album, an album first released in the UK on October 06, but that took the world in 2007. It's a simple soul/blues album, but what an album! In contrast to her jazz-influenced former album, Winehouse's focus is described as "shifting to the girl groups of the Fifties and Sixties". Back to Black went to number one on the UK Albums Chart numerous times, and entered at number seven on the Billboard 200. This was the highest debut entry for an album by a British female solo artist, only to be outdone two weeks later by Joss Stone who debuted at number two with Introducing Joss Stone. This is a personal album where she explains herself, why the drinking, why the man, the drugs. This is an album to remember.

OTHER NOMINEES:

* Róisín Murphy, OVERPOWERED
* Robyn, ROBYN

* Rodion, ROMANTIC JET DANCE

* Kate Nash, MADE OF BRICKS

BEST VIDEO
*
M.I.A., "Jimmy". Making a video for a remake of a 80's Bollywood song would be an easy test. And it was! And it came brilliantly. So much colors, the choreography, and all showing how beautiful M.I.A. is. This is a tune that was made for dance, and the video had to show that. This is what represents M.I.A. Mixing the sounds from the Middle East with the sounds of Europe. And giving it a fun touch of disco. She gave us a galactic, rather cheap, but genius music video, in a year where originality lacked of presence in the music videos.

OTHER NOMINEES:

* Róisín Murphy, "Let Me Know"
* Sophie Ellis-Bextor, "Today The Sun's On Us"
* Justice, "D.A.N.C.E."
*
Linkin Park, "Bleed it Out"

* Common + Lily Allen, "Drivin' Me Wild"
* Rihanna + Jay-Z, "Umbrella"

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT
* Björk, VOLTA: When you said you have made a tribal album, with tons of collaborations including the producer of the moment, Timbaland, everybody expects this to be your finest album of your career. We did get the tribal sounds... in like two songs. The rest was a compilation of Björk's previous albums sounds and nothing special. Yes, it is her highest entry on the charts, but that doesn't help the album that much. And what about the promo? She did went to the regular shows, has a tour and everything, but just ONE video!? She's Björk!!! She should have wow-ed us with that at least, but didn't accomplish that. "Earth Intruders" was an animated video, nice, but no Björk-esque enough. And the single released were also abismal, with only releasing "Earth Intruders" and "Innocence" in digital format. We know she's Björk and chart success is not that important, but this album was nothing compared to Homogenic or Post. It didn't live up the hype. But let's be optimist, she'll recover... one can hope =)

OTHER NOMINEES:

* Miranda!, EL DISCO DE TU CORAZON
* St. Vincent, MARRY ME
* Sugababes, CHANGE
* Spice Girls, GREATEST HITS

GRAMMY 2008

West. Winehouse. Grammys.
by Joal Ryan

West and Wino: Most nominated

Kanye West hates losing at award shows. The Grammys will give him eight more chances to win. Or not.

The rapper scored eight nominations—more than any other artist—as the field for the 50th Annual Grammy Awards was unveiled Thursday in Los Angeles. (Get the complete list of nominees)

Amy Winehouse, who was a singer before becoming a tabloid staple for her and her husband's drug troubles, was remembered for her Shirley Bassey pipes, with six nominations, including one for Best New Artist.

Other top multiple nominees were Justin Timberlake, Jay-Z, Timbaland, the Foo Fighters and T-Pain, with five each.

Chris Daughtry led all American Idol alums with four nods for his namesake band, Daughtry. (Not one of the nods, oddly enough, was for Best New Artist.) Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson and Fantasia were among the other ex-Idols to nab nods.

West, recently in the news for his personal life, following the sudden death of his mother, was in the game for his 50 Cent-conquering collection, Graduation; Winehouse, for her retro soul effort, Back to Black.

West and Winehouse will compete directly against each other in only one category: Album of the Year.

The two will vie for that top honor against three somewhat-unusual suspects: jazz great Herbie Hancock, up for his musings on Joni Mitchell, River: The Joni Letters; country star Vince Gill, up for his four-disc epic, These Days; and Foo Fighters, up for Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace. More-usual suspects Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen and Timbaland were honored with nominations elsewhere.

The Record of the Year race, for best single, shapes up like this: the Winehouse anthem "Rehab," the Justin Timberlake jam, "What Goes Around Comes Around," the
Rihanna and Jay-Z summertime staple, "Umbrella," Foo Fighters' "The Pretender" and Beyoncé's "Irreplaceable."

Winehouse and "Rehab," along with "Umbrella," show up again in the Song of the Year field. That category, honoring a hit's songwriter, also finds Carrie Underwood's "Before He Cheats," Plain White T's breakthrough ditty, "Hey There Delilah," and Corinne Bailey Rae's "Like a Star."

In the Best New Artist category, Winehouse faces fellow soul singer Ledisi, alterna-acts Feist and Paramore, and teen country star Taylor Swift.

Winehouse's name will be heard again in the Best Female Pop Vocal discussion, where her inescapable "Rehab" rant will compete against Christina Aguilera's swinging "Candyman," Feist's signature song-turned-iTunes jingle, "1234," Fergie's "Big Girls Don't Cry," and Nelly Furtado's "Say It Right."

Timberlake, the star of last winter's Grammy show, is up for Best Male Pop Vocal for "What Goes Around...Comes Around." He'll face crooner Michael Buble ("Call Me Irresponsible"), bluesy John Mayer ("Belief"), Seal, who recorded "Amazing" minus new duet partner Heidi Klum, and McCartney ("Dance Tonight"), who like Feist, found that iTunes/iPod commercials are great places to promote music.

West, who, outside of Album of the Year, didn't factor into the other big general categories, resurfaces in rap. His "Stronger" will vie for the Best Rap Solo Grammy against old friend 50 Cent ("I Get Money"), Jay-Z ("Show Me What You Got"), The People ("Common"), and T.I. ("Big Things Poppin' [Do It]").

Daughtry, the whole band, not just the person, rocked the Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals field with "It's Not Over." The newbie will go amp to amp against veteran acts Green Day ("Working Class Hero"), Nickelback ("If Everyone Cared"), U2 ("Instant Karma") and the White Stripes ("Icky Thump"). The late John Lennon is the unofficial sixth nominee in this category—Green Day and U2 both earned their nods for contributing Lennon standards to the collection Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur.

Chris Daughtry's fellow Idol alum Fantasia turns up with a Best Female R&B Vocal nod for "When I See You." Also nominated there: Mary J. Blige ("Just Fine"), Alicia Keys ("No One"), Chrisette Michele ("If I Have My Way") and Jill Scott ("Hate on Me").

Prince finds himself in the Best Male R&B Vocal field for "Future Baby Mama." His competition: Raheem DeVaughn ("Woman"); Musiq Soulchild ("B.U.D.D.Y."), Ne-Yo ("Because of You") and Tank ("Please Don't Go").

The 50th Annual Grammys are scheduled to be presented Feb. 10 in Los Angeles.
